July 21, 2016 at 7 PM. GATHERING THE MAGIC. Solo Performance by Magician & Storyteller Nelson Lugo
GATHERING THE MAGIC is a 90 minute solo performance where magician and storyteller Nelson Lugo, combines slice-of-life storytelling with sophisticated stage magic. In the style of NPR’s The Moth, combined with classic turn-of-the-century parlor magic, Nelson Lugo presents sleight-of-hand in a whole new way. He lures his audience into an intricate web of pop cultural influences and valuable life lessons that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Descended from a genuine Santeria, Nelson Lugo has evolved his singular magical style for more than 15 years, showcasing classic prestidigitation with a wink and a nod to the nerd culture that has shaped him. GATHERING THE MAGIC is in its essence a love story which asks if there can be truth in deception, for it’s not always so important HOW a trick is done, but WHY.
“…stories are captivating, and he has excised so much of what some people hate about magic that I strongly urge nonfans to see this unique performance.” stagebuddy.com
“Mr. Lugo’s enthusiasm and love for his craft gives us, the audience, a deeper appreciation of why we love magic tricks so much.” nytheaternow.com

May 6, 2016. Conference Between Melancholy and Market. The Short Story of a Great Success: “The Cluj School of Painting” by Romanian Art Historian and Curator HOREA AVRAM
“The Cluj School of Painting”, as critics and the art press named it, is an art and art market phenomenon that has begun to grow in the solid and thriving cultural environment of the city of Cluj, Romania, around 2009; in the recent years, this school has gained an unexpected international recognition, confirmed by the articles dedicated to it in popular art media and prestigious scholarly publications, alike, as well as by significant exhibitions and collaborations with top art institutions worldwide (such as MoMA New York, Tate London, Stedelijk Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Venice Biennale etc.). The international art market has also confirmed the value of the “Cluj School of Painting”: “The Sunflowers in 1937”, by Adrian Ghenie, was recently sold for about 4.5 million dollars, the highest price ever paid for a work by a Romanian contemporary artist. Other major artists of this school are: Victor Man, Marius Bercea, Mircea Suciu, Șerban Savu, Radu Comşa, Ciprian Mureşan, Mircea Cantor, Florin Ştefan etc.
Horea Avram is an art historian, media theorist and independent curator. He is a graduate of the National University of Arts Bucharest, Faculty of History and Theory of Art (1995). He also has a master’s degree in Cultural Management from École Supérieure de Commerce de Dijon, France (1999), and a PhD in Art History and Communication Studies from McGill University, Montreal, Canada (2012). His research interests focus on visual culture and representation theory in relation to new media technologies. His most recent publications include: “Augmented Reality”, in Encyclopedia of Aesthetics (second edition, editor-in-chief Michael Kelly, Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2014), and “The Visual Regime of Augmented Space”, in Theorizing Visual Studies: Writing Through the Discipline (editor James Elkins, New York: Routledge, 2013). He publishes essays in: M/C Media and Culture Journal, International Journal of Arts and Technology, Kinephanos, Ekphrasis, Idea. Art + Society, Arta etc.
Hours: May 6: 7 pm – 9 pm.
“Movement and Location” is an award-winning 2014 production from the talented team of Bodine Boling (who wrote and starred in the film) and her husband Alexis Boling (who directed). Also starring are Catherine Missal, Brendan Griffin, and David Andrew Macdonald.
Although sometimes referred to as a sci-fi thriller, the film has no special effects and very little sex or violence. It is ultimately about the immigrant experience and people’s need for connection. (In this case, the main characters, instead of being from another country, just happen to be from hundreds of years in the future.)
After the screening, the Bolings will take questions from the audience.
